Hello, beautiful People! Hope, you're already enjoying this Summer:)
If you're reading My blog for a long time, you know, that 'Fashion's fade — style is eternal' is sort of My Life Rule. It means, that I prefer having My own unique style, which suits Me the best — to having a closet full of 'fashionable', yet absolutely-not-in-my-style stuff.
So, if you're thinking the same way, but haven't found your own style yet, definitely check out an article down below, written by Elisaveta Sirotinina from Lizfoxter! Hope, her tips will help you to understand what does the good taste mean;)
Enjoy!
So what the good taste is all about? It seems like an exact same look can turn out to be fabulous on one girl but ridiculous on another. Good taste is not just the clothes you are wearing, but also the process of creating a little piece of art by combining your body features, clothes and the environment around you.
Clothes are supposed to look good on you, not separately or on someone else
If you just mimic the outfit of your favourite fashion blogger without thinking it through, it won’t make pretty or stylish. Each body is unique so the outfit should be created for your body type, not separately. You should definitely use other people’s looks for inspiration, but don’t treat it as an action guide. Good taste is the ability to look at yourself and tell if the clothes you are wearing suit you or not.Let’s say your body is not perfect (just as mine! You are not alone, babe!), but you still want to appear as attractive as possible (Dah). You check out your favourite fashion magazine and decide that if you dress the same as the girl on a page, you will turn into a beauty queen. But you should remember that it’s not all about the clothes. You should take into account your figure, height, colour, and all the other factors that will mix to create a complete look.
Something that makes one girl stylish can actually do the opposite on you. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, it’s natural. It is important to understand and to know the ways to highlight what needs highlighting and cover up what needs hiding.
The ability to combine clothes into an outfit
Your wardrobe can be stuffed with brand clothing and it all might be extremely expensive but the value of it falls to zero if you fail to mix them together in a harmonious way. You can be stylish with cheap clothes, and you can look inadequate wearing brands.
Some people have a sense of fashion and it’s simple for them to combine clothes and to come up with an original look. Those of us, who (unfortunately) were not blessed with such an ability, can use books, magazines and blogs to educate ourselves about the art of dressing up like a fashionista.Sure, there are outfits where incompatible items come together to create an edgy and ground breaking look. However, people with great taste and intuition create those looks. Those people can actually pull it off. If you doubt that your sense of fashion is that amazing, just stick to hard and fast rules that you can find in fashion blogs, magazines etc.
Colours are the key! That’s why the colour theory exists
No matter what is in fashion right now, the basics of the colour theory stand.
If you take a look at a colour circle, you will see that by using geometric figures you can create perfect colour palettes. For example the colours that are opposite from each other combine very well, same as the ones that form a triangle. The depth and the lightness of each shade can vary but the underlying colour is still the same. I love this website, you can use it to play around with colours and create custom palettes for yourself. I used it to design the LizFoxter Blog. You can find inspiration in the nature because its creations are always well balanced and beautiful in the most profound way. For specific examples and palettes use this blog, where authors pick colours from photographs to come up with a great combination.
So, what’s the occasion?
Having good taste is partially having the ability to analyse the situation you are about to walk into and deciding what would be the best option clothing wise. A person with good taste can dress appropriately for any given event. On contrast, if a girl is wearing an evening dress to a picnic, she is only showing off her ignorance, even though the dress itself could have been great. It’s all about context, people. This is why you’ve got to learn all the different types of dress code and the setting in which it’s used. Sooner or later you will attend an event where this knowledge will come in handy. On top of that, I encourage you to freshen the etiquette rules in your memory (especially the ones that touch on the style). For example, your clothes always have to be whole and clean, I-am-homeless looks are just tacky.
What’s the weather?
What can be more ridiculous that an evening dress at a picnic? A half-naked body when it’s -30 C (-22 F)! I mean, I get it. You want to be hot, not covered up and looking like a penguin. You know what? It is possible to find jackets that actually fit and emphasize your best features. Try bright colours and crazy shapes. Take a look at all the fashion icons; they rock their winter jackets and cosy warm outfits. They dress appropriately and that is what creates harmony in their look. They are comfortable, not freezing cold, so they look happy and natural.Your comfort affects the way you look. If you are shivering and turning blue (blue skin is never pretty); or if you are sweating, or your clothes are way too tight – you won’t look good. Beauty might require sacrifice, but not this kind.
Travelling much? Check the local customs
If you are visiting a new place, you have to educate yourself about its customs. In many countries, it is not acceptable for women to show too much skin so you have to respect that. You can argue all you want about your rights, but you are a guest, so act like it.
A true lady won’t create conflict and cause any negativism by dressing inappropriately.
So, what does the good taste include?
· Knowing your body and the techniques you can use to make it appear even more attractive
· Ability to create a harmony within the outfit
· Right colour choices
· Knowledge of various dress codes and understanding of what is appropriate in a given situation
· Understanding the weather and what clothes are needed for it
· Knowing what culture you are in and it’s requirements when it comes to clothing
Signs of an absurd look:
· Creating an outfit to attract attention rather than to look great
· Copying someone else’s look without adjusting it to your completion
· Expensive clothes that are mixed in all the wrong ways
· …Same as the brand names written all over your clothes and accessories (Just stop)
· Inadequate clothes for current weather conditions
· Too much skin. Well, we do live in a free world but it doesn’t mean that being half naked is ever appropriate (except for the beach, but we are not on a beach, are we?)
· Tattered or dirty clothes. Trust me, the difference between ripped jeans and the ones that are falling apart is obvious
· Clothes that cause profound discomfort
Every complete look exists in a context, so you have to treat it according to its context. What looks amazing right now can become inappropriate if the situation changes. Think for yourself - evaluate your body and the surroundings to build a look based on it.
In addition, it is essential to let yourself Feel. With a capital letter, yeah. We tend to waste too much time trying to impress everyone. Instead, just relax and just look at yourself in a mirror and you will be able to tell if you look right because you will Feel.
Each and every one of us is beautiful and fashion exists to enable you to express this beauty.
So go on and be your own beauty queen!
